The Olmec Heads

Seventeen colossal stone heads scattered across southern Mexico, first documented in the 19th century, display distinctive facial features that sparked theories about ancient transoceanic contact. These basalt sculptures stand up to 10 feet tall and weigh 20 tons, dating to 1200 BC. Each depicts a unique individual wearing a helmet-like headdress, possibly portraying rulers or important figures. The Olmec culture transported these massive stones from quarries 50 miles away before mysteriously disappearing around 400 BC.
