Teotihuacan’s Pyramids
Recent tunnel excavations beneath Mexico’s ancient city uncovered mercury pools that possibly symbolized an underworld in cosmic mythology. Archaeologists found these chambers under the Pyramid of the Sun in 2017, along with jade statues and obsidian blades dating back 1,800 years. The presence of mercury, rarely seen in pre-Columbian sites, might represent rivers or lakes in their belief system. The unknown culture that built Teotihuacan created a massive urban center covering 25 square kilometers.
