Sanxingdui Bronze Masks
These eerie, oversized bronze faces unearthed in China’s Sichuan province point to a sophisticated unknown civilization from 1200 BC. The masks feature protruding eyes and exaggerated features, some measuring over a meter wide, unlike anything else in Chinese art history. Gold and jade artifacts found alongside them suggest a wealthy society with possible shamanistic practices. The 2022 excavations uncovered additional pits, showing this mysterious culture thrived for centuries before vanishing.
