The Rosetta Stone

This crucial artifact, discovered in 1799 during Napoleon’s Egyptian campaign, provided the key to unlocking ancient Egyptian hieroglyphs after centuries of mystery. The 760-kilogram stone slab contains the same decree written in Greek, Demotic, and hieroglyphic scripts from 196 BC. Linguist Jean-François Champollion finally cracked the code in 1822, enabling translations of temple inscriptions and papyri that revealed 3,000 years of Egyptian history. It now resides in the British Museum.
