This Egyptian port city remained underwater for 1,200 years until divers located it in 2000, yielding massive statues and artifacts that changed our understanding of Mediterranean trade. Found off Alexandria’s coast, Heracleion sank in the 8th century due to earthquakes and rising seas. The site preserved 16-foot statues of Egyptian gods alongside Greek inscriptions.
