Viking blades bearing the inscription “+ULFBERHT+” have turned up across Europe, showing metallurgical techniques that shouldn’t have existed until centuries later. These 1,000-year-old weapons, found from Norway to Russia, contained high-carbon crucible steel likely imported from Persia. Around 170 authentic specimens exist, their purity suggesting a specialized workshop whose methods remain mysterious. These superior weapons gave Norse warriors a significant advantage in battle while hinting at extensive trade networks.
