Tourist shops received shipments of seemingly ordinary plastic souvenirs that actually contained banned ivory. The smugglers carved ivory to resemble inexpensive trinkets and even added fake “Made in China” stamps. Special scanning equipment detected the organic material despite the convincing disguise.
