Populists ignored the ethics of Trump’s business and his relationships with Washington and New York elite. Instead, they clambered to the belief that because he was so independently wealthy, he didn’t have to kowtow to those who had been running Washington for decades. He could act in the best interests of America, especially the common people who had been ignored for so long, because he wasn’t financially obligated to pay favors to big companies.
