Following the election of the Democratic candidate Barack Obama in 2008, Trump switched from the Democratic Party to the Republican Party. His social views were much more liberal than in keeping with mainstream Republicanism, but his populist mindset that had endeared him to members of the Reform Party transitioned smoothly to the Republican Party.
