By the end of the 1980s, Trump had lost his billionaire status and, to keep the family business afloat, had to borrow from his siblings’ trust funds. He has faced consistent scrutiny over what his net worth actually is; in 2007, he said: “My net worth fluctuates, and it goes up and down with markets and with attitudes and with feelings, even my own feelings.” In total, six of his real-estate developments have declared bankruptcy.
