7. Battle of Ichi-no-Tani (1184)
In March 1184, Minamoto no Yoshitsune executed a daring assault on the Taira fortress at Ichi-no-Tani, located near present-day Kobe. He divided his forces into three groups: one led by his brother, Minamoto no Noriyori, attacked from the east, while Yoshitsune himself led a small detachment down a steep cliff from the north. This surprise attack caught the Taira off guard, leading to a decisive Minamoto victory. The battle is renowned for the individual combat between Kumagai no Naozane and Taira no Atsumori, which has been immortalized in Japanese literature and theater (en.wikipedia.org).
