5. Battle of Honnō-ji (1582)
In June 1582, Oda Nobunaga, a dominant figure in Japan’s Sengoku period, was unexpectedly attacked by his vassal, Akechi Mitsuhide, at Honnō-ji Temple in Kyoto. Surrounded and outnumbered, Nobunaga chose to commit seppuku, ending his life and his ambitions to unify Japan. This sudden betrayal by Mitsuhide destabilized the ongoing unification efforts, leading to a brief period of turmoil until Nobunaga’s successor, Toyotomi Hideyoshi, avenged his death and continued the path to unification (en.wikipedia.org).
