With the conquest of Babylon by Cyrus the Great in 539 BCE, the Persian Empire ushered in a new era for ancient Palestine. Exiled Jews were permitted to return and rebuild Jerusalem, including its sacred temple. Under Persian rule, the region was incorporated into the satrapy system but enjoyed a notable degree of local autonomy. This period set the stage for religious and cultural renewal.
