Easter Island Collapse (Pre-18th Century)
The mysterious Moai statues that made Easter Island famous also caused its downfall. Transporting these massive stone monuments required extensive wooden rollers and levers. Island forests disappeared completely over generations. Without trees for fishing boats or erosion control, the population crashed from resource exhaustion. When European explorers arrived, they found a diminished society surrounded by hundreds of stone faces on barren hillsides.
