Convenient and nearly indestructible, plastic seemed miraculous when it was introduced. Nobody considered where it would end up. Now, over 150 million tons float in ocean gyres. Sea turtles mistake bags for jellyfish and starve with stomachs full of plastic. Microparticles have entered the food chain at every level. The material designed to last forever for temporary use continues accumulating worldwide as cleanup efforts struggle.
