Taiping Rebellion Flood (1850s)
Civil war drove Chinese rebels to weaponize the Yellow River. They deliberately breached dikes to halt advancing imperial troops. Water inundated vast areas of eastern China, drowning hundreds of thousands of civilians. Crops disappeared beneath floodwaters, causing widespread starvation. The military tactic proved ineffective yet caused immense suffering. This catastrophic decision showed how environmental systems can become weapons with far-reaching consequences.
