Whaling Boom (19th Century)
Whale oil’s superior lamp qualities doomed the ocean’s largest inhabitants. Traditional cultures that had sustainably harvested whales watched industrial fleets devastate populations worldwide. Some species dropped below 1,000 individuals. The hunt continued until petroleum products finally replaced whale oil. Ocean ecosystems lost their keystone species and still haven’t fully recovered despite international protection. This commercial slaughter permanently altered marine environments globally.
