For months before the cataclysmic explosion, Krakatoa sent warning signals through increasingly violent eruptions. Nearby villages largely ignored these obvious danger signs. When the mountain finally exploded with apocalyptic force, tsunamis up to 100 feet high slammed into unprepared coastal communities. Around 36,000 people perished needlessly. Thousands might have escaped the waves that followed history’s most powerful recorded volcanic eruption.
