The Dust Bowl stands as one of America’s worst environmental catastrophes because farmers destroyed what protected the land. They aggressively plowed under the deep-rooted native grasses that had evolved over centuries to hold soil in place during the region’s recurring droughts. When severe dry conditions struck in the 1930s, nothing remained to anchor the topsoil. Massive black dust storms soon towered thousands of feet high, blocking sunlight for days while productive farmland transformed into worthless wastelands.
