Ancient Harbor Engineering
Phoenician engineers constructed sophisticated harbors using underwater concrete breakwaters and carefully designed channels. They built multi-level docking systems that accommodated ships of various sizes and incorporated warehouses right at the water’s edge. Their harbors included mechanisms for cleaning accumulated silt and protecting ships from storms. These design principles influenced Mediterranean port construction for centuries.
