Roman miners developed sophisticated methods for extracting precious metals from deep underground. They created elaborate systems of wooden support beams and used hydraulic mining to break down rock faces with pressurized water. Their ventilation systems kept fresh air flowing through deep tunnels, while water wheels helped remove groundwater from mine shafts. These techniques remained unsurpassed until the Industrial Revolution.
