Ingenious Agricultural Innovations
Aztec farmers created chinampas, artificial islands made from layers of soil and vegetation in shallow lake beds. These raised fields provided excellent drainage and nutrient-rich soil for growing crops. The surrounding canals supplied constant irrigation and supported fish farming. This intensive agricultural system produced multiple harvests yearly and supported large urban populations.
