Ancient Waterproofing Methods
Egyptian shipwrights pioneered waterproofing techniques by applying bitumen, a natural tar substance, to their reed boats. This versatile material soon found its way into other applications, including protecting stone structures, canals, and public baths from water damage. The ancient builders’ understanding of waterproofing materials proved so effective that some of their treated structures still stand today.
