EU Institutional Surveillance

CIA and NSA operations actively targeted European Union offices in Brussels and at the United Nations. Intelligence agencies eavesdropped on trade negotiations and military discussions between EU members for strategic advantage. They planted bugs in EU buildings and intercepted data from secure networks. Der Spiegel reported these activities in 2013 after Snowden’s leaks. EU officials demanded explanations from the American government about these surveillance practices, which many viewed as violations of diplomatic protocol.
