19. Witnessing Civilian Suffering
One of the most difficult realities for soldiers was witnessing the devastating toll of war on Afghan civilians. Many encountered families uprooted by violence, children orphaned, and entire communities struggling to survive. Seeing these tragedies repeatedly led to compassion fatigue and, for some, deep moral injury. The emotional burden of watching innocent lives shattered by conflict left lasting scars and often weighed heavily on troops long after returning home.
