1. Constant Threat of IEDs
One of the most pervasive dangers soldiers faced in Afghanistan was the constant threat of Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs). Every patrol, convoy, or foot march meant risking an encounter with hidden explosives. Roads and trails, even those traveled daily, could be laced with deadly traps. The unpredictability of IEDs forced soldiers to move slowly and methodically, intensifying stress and exhaustion. IEDs accounted for a significant portion of casualties, making each step a potential life-or-death decision.
