15. Guernica, Spain
On April 26, 1937, during the Spanish Civil War, the Basque town of Guernica was bombed by Nazi Germany’s Condor Legion and Fascist Italy’s Aviazione Legionaria, resulting in significant civilian casualties and widespread destruction. This attack was one of the first to target civilians, highlighting the devastating potential of aerial warfare. In response, Pablo Picasso created his renowned painting “Guernica,” which powerfully conveys the horrors of war and has become an enduring symbol of peace.
