9. Warsaw, Poland

9. Warsaw, Poland
Warsaw’s post-war resilience rebuilt its historic areas, showcasing the city’s enduring spirit.

Warsaw endured repeated bombings during World War II, most severely during the 1939 siege and the 1944 Uprising. By January 1945, between 85% and 90% of the city’s buildings had been completely destroyed. This devastation included the loss of 923 historical buildings, 25 churches, 14 libraries, and numerous cultural monuments. The post-war reconstruction, driven by the resilience of its citizens, restored the Old Town and other historic areas, earning Warsaw a place on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1980 (whc.unesco.org).
