10. Rotterdam, Netherlands
On May 14, 1940, during the German invasion of the Netherlands, Rotterdam was subjected to a devastating aerial bombardment by the Luftwaffe. Approximately 1,150 people were killed, and the city’s historic center was almost entirely destroyed. This attack led to the Dutch surrender and significantly influenced Rotterdam’s post-war architectural development.
