During the Vietnam War, Hanoi was subjected to extensive bombing campaigns, notably Operation Rolling Thunder and the 1972 “Christmas Bombing” (Operation Linebacker II). These operations targeted both military and civilian infrastructure, resulting in significant destruction and civilian casualties. Official North Vietnamese sources reported 1,624 civilian deaths in Hanoi and Haiphong during the 1972 bombings. The Bach Mai Hospital, the largest medical facility in North Vietnam, was severely damaged, leading to numerous fatalities among patients and staff (english.vov.vn).
