5. Princess Ka‘iulani of Hawaii
Princess Ka‘iulani, born Victoria Kawēkiu Ka‘iulani Lunalilo Kalaninuiahilapalapa Cleghorn on October 16, 1875, in Honolulu, was the only child of Princess Miriam Likelike and Scottish businessman Archibald Scott Cleghorn. As the niece of King Kalākaua and Queen Liliʻuokalani, she was the last heir apparent to the Hawaiian throne. Educated in England, Ka‘iulani returned to Hawaii in 1893 to oppose the overthrow of the monarchy. Despite her efforts, the kingdom was annexed in 1898. She died on March 6, 1899, at the age of 23 (smithsonianmag.com).
