Prince Diponegoro, born in 1785 in Yogyakarta, Java, was the eldest son of Sultan Hamengkubuwono III (britannica.com). A devout Muslim and Javanese nobleman, he led the Java War (1825-1830) against Dutch colonial rule, uniting various Javanese factions in a significant resistance movement. After his capture in 1830, he was exiled to Makassar, where he died in 1855. In Indonesia, he is celebrated as a national hero, yet his legacy remains understated in global historical narratives.
