4. ATF’s Initial Raid: A Disastrous Beginning
On February 28, 1993, agents from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms (ATF) launched a surprise raid on the Mount Carmel compound, aiming to execute a search warrant for illegal firearms and explosives. However, tactical errors compromised the element of surprise, allowing the Davidians to anticipate the raid. A fierce gunfight erupted, lasting nearly two hours and resulting in casualties on both sides—four ATF agents and six Branch Davidians died in the chaos. The failed assault not only intensified tensions but also marked the beginning of a prolonged and highly scrutinized standoff, broadcast nationwide.
