4. The Order of Saint Lazarus: Decline Through Mergers
The Order of Saint Lazarus, founded in the 12th century, initially focused on caring for lepers in Jerusalem (st-lazarus.org.uk). Over time, it expanded its mission to include military defense of Christian territories. After the fall of Acre in 1291, the order’s influence waned. In 1489, Pope Innocent VIII attempted to merge it with the Knights Hospitaller, but this was resisted. In 1572, the Italian branch merged with the Order of Saint Maurice, forming the Order of Saints Maurice and Lazarus. The French branch merged with the Order of Our Lady of Mount Carmel in 1608, creating the Royal Military and Hospitaller Order of Our Lady of Mount Carmel and Saint Lazarus of Jerusalem united.
