The Order of the Holy Spirit, established by King Henry III of France in 1578, was the most prestigious chivalric order in France, reserved for princes and powerful nobles. Its military and religious functions were abolished during the French Revolution, along with other chivalric orders of the Ancien Régime. The order was briefly revived during the Bourbon Restoration but was abolished again following the July Revolution of 1830. Today, it exists as a dynastic order under the House of France (en.wikipedia.org).
