6. Nero Executed His Wife Octavia
Nero’s first wife, Claudia Octavia, daughter of Emperor Claudius, met a tragic end due to the emperor’s ruthless ambitions. Their marriage was politically advantageous, but Nero quickly grew tired of Octavia, seeking instead the company of his lover, Poppaea Sabina. Determined to remove Octavia from his life, Nero falsely accused her of adultery and exiled her to the island of Pandateria.
Public outrage erupted, as Octavia remained immensely popular among Romans. Undeterred, Nero ordered her execution shortly afterward, brutally severing ties with his past and alienating many Romans who viewed Octavia’s death as a grave injustice.
