3. Nero Married a Castrated Slave
Among Nero’s most bizarre personal episodes was his marriage to Sporus, a young male slave. Following the death of his beloved wife, Poppaea Sabina—whom Nero allegedly killed by kicking her during an argument—the emperor sought to fill the void in the most disturbing manner. He ordered Sporus to be castrated, dressed him in women’s clothing, and referred to him openly as “Poppaea.” Their lavish wedding ceremony mirrored traditional Roman nuptials, complete with celebrations and festivities. This unusual union shocked contemporary Romans, further emphasizing Nero’s disregard for societal norms and his increasingly erratic behavior.
