5. Nero Built an Enormous Golden Palace
Following Rome’s devastating fire, Nero seized the opportunity to construct his extraordinarily lavish palace, the Domus Aurea, or “Golden House.” Spanning hundreds of acres, this extravagant complex featured artificial lakes, sprawling gardens, and opulent rooms decorated with gold leaf, gems, and intricate frescoes. Its grand centerpiece was reportedly an enormous rotating dining room, designed to mimic the heavens. Yet, Romans viewed Nero’s extravagant project with contempt, criticizing the emperor for draining the treasury and exploiting Rome’s tragedy for personal indulgence. The Domus Aurea became a stark symbol of Nero’s extravagance and disregard for the wellbeing of his people.
