Historical accounts describe him showering crowds with rare perfumes, expensive clothing, exotic animals, and even gold coins dropped from above, creating chaotic spectacles in the streets. While initially delighting the masses, these lavish giveaways soon drew criticism for their wasteful extravagance and impracticality. Far from endearing him to the populace in the long term, Nero’s bizarre generosity only intensified resentment among those who saw these costly displays as further evidence of his reckless mismanagement of Rome’s dwindling resources.
