5. Operation Paperclip
After World War II, the U.S. initiated Operation Paperclip, a covert program that relocated over 1,600 German scientists, engineers, and technicians to America. The primary objective was to leverage their expertise, particularly in rocketry, to advance U.S. military and space capabilities during the early stages of the Cold War. Notably, Wernher von Braun, a key figure in Nazi Germany’s V-2 rocket program, became instrumental in developing the U.S. space program. However, many of these scientists had affiliations with the Nazi Party, raising ethical concerns about the U.S. government’s willingness to overlook their pasts for strategic gains (history.com).
