13. Operation Midnight Climax
Initiated in 1954 as part of the CIA’s MKUltra program, Operation Midnight Climax involved setting up safehouses in San Francisco and New York City, where prostitutes on the CIA payroll lured clients. These individuals were unknowingly dosed with LSD, and their reactions were observed through one-way mirrors by CIA agents. The operation aimed to study the effects of mind-altering substances on behavior and to develop potential interrogation techniques. The program was terminated in 1963 after being exposed, raising significant ethical concerns.
