Arthur Schopenhauer saw life driven by blind, insatiable Will causing endless suffering. This German philosopher found no grand purpose except temporarily escaping desire through art or asceticism. People might find limited relief by denying the Will to live. Schopenhauer viewed existence as fundamentally painful, making resignation and compassion the only reasonable responses.
