12. 4th Marine Division
The 4th Marine Division, activated on August 16, 1943, played a pivotal role in the Pacific Theater during World War II. The division participated in four major amphibious assaults: Roi-Namur in the Kwajalein Atoll, Saipan, Tinian, and Iwo Jima. For its extraordinary heroism, the division was awarded the Presidential Unit Citation for its actions during the battles of Saipan and Tinian, with a bronze star added for the Iwo Jima operation.
