7. 5th Special Forces Group (Green Berets)
The 5th Special Forces Group (Airborne), known as “The Legion,” is renowned for its expertise in unconventional warfare and counter-terrorism. Activated on September 21, 1961, at Fort Bragg, North Carolina, the group was among the first Special Forces units deployed to Vietnam, where it trained and led indigenous forces in reconnaissance and combat missions. Despite being one of the smallest units engaged in Vietnam, the group’s colors fly 14 campaign streamers from that conflict, and its soldiers are among the most decorated in U.S. military history, earning 18 Medals of Honor (nine posthumously). The group’s motto, “De Oppresso Liber,” translates to “To Free the Oppressed,” reflecting its mission to assist oppressed peoples worldwide. (home.army.mil)
