24. This Fossil Shows the Biggest Sea Monster Found to Date
English folklore is full of stories of sea monsters that caused the untimely sinking of ships and deaths of sailors, but how much stock should you place in them? Well, according to this fossil, not much. This fossil is of an ichthyosaur, a fish-like sea dragon that lived at the same time as dinosaurs — about 180 million years ago. Despite being over 30 feet long and perfectly capable of brutalizing anyone who dared too close, this ichthyosaur could not have terrorized any ships because it died out long before modern humans came into existence.
