34. “Flapper” Has Many Meanings
One theory suggests that “flapper” originates from the 17th-century connotation of a “forward young woman,” while another suggests that it refers to the flapping of the arms that one does when dancing the Charleston. Some people suggest that the term comes from women who refused to button their galoshes in rainy weather, so they made a “flap, flap, flap” sound.
