7. Spiro Mounds (Oklahoma)
Spiro Mounds, located in Le Flore County, Oklahoma, was a significant Mississippian ceremonial center active between 900 and 1450 AD. The 150-acre site features 12 mounds, including platform mounds for elite residences and burial mounds containing elaborate artifacts. Archaeological excavations have uncovered a wealth of ceremonial objects, shell carvings, and trade goods, highlighting Spiro’s role in an extensive trade network.
