Fala, a Scottish Terrier, was a cherished companion to President Franklin D. Roosevelt. Given to Roosevelt in 1940, Fala quickly became a fixture at the White House, often accompanying the president on official trips and even overseas. His popularity was immense, with the public sending him fan mail and photographers frequently capturing his antics. Fala’s presence provided comfort and a sense of normalcy during challenging times, notably during World War II. In recognition of his significance, a bronze statue of Fala stands beside Roosevelt’s at the Franklin Delano Roosevelt Memorial in Washington, D.C (nps.gov).
