Following the fall of the Taliban in Afghanistan in 2002, girls eagerly returned to school, and international nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) established many schools specifically for girls. Members of the Taliban and other terrorist groups responded by attacking girls’ schools.

No one died when terrorists poisoned at least 20 girls schools in Kabul, Kandahar, and other areas of Afghanistan with pesticide. However, hundreds of children and teachers fell ill, and some experienced permanent injuries. Attacks on girls who attend school and women who go to work have long been a threat to the Taliban and other terrorist groups
