1. The Louvre, Paris
The Louvre, one of the world’s most visited museums, is renowned for its vast collection of art and historical artifacts. However, its roots trace back to a much darker origin. Originally erected as a fortress in the late 12th century by King Philip II, the site was intended to protect Paris from potential invasions. Built over the ruins of a medieval castle, the Louvre’s earliest purpose was far from its current cultural and artistic mission. Over time, it transformed into a royal palace before becoming the museum we know today. Its walls, therefore, conceal centuries of tumultuous history beneath their elegant exterior.
